God told Jonah to go to Nineveh and warn the people. This time, Jonah did as he was told and the people listened and fasted and tried to demonstrate their desire to change.

God gives everyone a second chance. It’s not our place to judge or to rule out forgiveness. It’s our job to be messengers and bridges toward wholeness. How do we become that? By working toward becoming open to God’s urgings; by keeping our eyes, ears, hearts and minds open to new thoughts.

If that seems hard to do, it is. It’s appropriate to consider doing or saying hard truths today as we celebrate the lessons and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a man we honor with greatness because he humbled himself and overcame our instinctive need for self-preservation. MLK Jr. obeyed his Maker and sacrificed himself, and in so doing, he changed generations of lives. With God’s help, we can risk attempting to do the same.
